Brand Information
Salomon, now an internationally recognized footwear and outdoor sports equipment brand sold in more than 160 countries, began in 1947 as a small father and son ski edge manufacturer. Founder Francois Salomon and his son, George, soon found success by perfecting the modern design for ski bindings in their upstart company in the heart of the French Alps. This small dream of keeping people from falling off their skis would make the Salomon name famous worldwide. In 1955, George made skis safer by creating a security toe binding, and two years later, an entire ski binding system was created to replace the traditional leather straps. By 1962, the company was distributing its continually advancing product line worldwide through a system of importers, and 10 years later, Salomon was the number one ski binding manufacturer in the world.
Over the years, the company has diversified its product line, manufacturing apparel in 1976 and ski boots in 1979. In more recent years, Salomon has even branched out from ski equipment to launch a line of hiking boot (1994), an entire line of snowboarding equipment including boards, boots, and of course, bindings (1997), and inline skates (1998). Also in 1997, the company created the "Snow Blade," making way for an entirely new winter sport. Through all this, the company's ski bindings remained some of the best and most popular on the market, with total sales reaching 50 million in 1995.
All of this success and diversity comes without abandoning the original Salomon legacy of pioneering equipment designs, constant product innovation, attention to detail, and overall love of mountain sports. Today, the Salomon company manufactures products for both alpine and Nordic skiing, as well as equipment, clothing and footwear for snowboarding, adventure racing, mountaineering, and various other outdoor sports, earning its ambitious claim to be "The Mountain Sports Company."
