This exceptional athlete works and rides with a passion unmatched, and this passion and love for riding really shined on one of his more recent events, the Qualcomm Million Dollar Challenge, which is an intense seven-day ride for CAF. If you are unfamiliar with CAF, that stands for "Challenged Athletes Foundation," a group that provides not only equipment and support to physically challenged athletes, but has a mission to make sure that people with physical challenges have the same freedom to enjoy sports that the rest of us take for granted. David took the challenge of this formidable ride seriously. Many SHOEBACCA team members trained with David on several of his training rides in his preparation for this grueling seven-day, 600-mile course winding down the Southern California coastline from San Francisco to San Diego. "To prepare for this huge event, David rode on many 100-mile 'death marches,' pushing himself to the limit," explains Folse. "I've watched David go from a guy who picked up a bike a few years ago to reconnect with a favorite hobby from his past to become a passionate rider, rivaling some of the pros with his drive and perseverance. He truly is an inspiration, and helps to motivate the entire team." Sure, David rides to stay healthy and to achieve a sense of personal accomplishment. But what drives him to compete and to reach new goals is more than a personal thing. David looks for a reason to ride; a purpose, if you will. The CAF ride was more than a 600-mile tour down the coast. This ride was one that gave David the opportunity to give back. Riding with a purpose higher than his own is what drives David to excel. "As you're riding something like the CAF ride, you instinctively think things like, 'Oh, man; my legs are killing me,' and then you realize that the whole reason you ride is to provide for those men and women who can't say the same thing because of injuries and disabilities. Seeing people riding hand bikes and using some of the things that CAF provides reminds you how fortunate you are, and doing these events gives purpose to what we have been blessed enough to be able to do." SHOEBACCA is proud of David's accomplishment in the Qualcomm Million Dollar Challenge, and wish him and the rest of the team success! Visit here often for updated information on Team SHOEBACCA! |
