Tackle – taking control of the ball away from another player, usually by kicking it away; any attempt to tackle must be directed toward the ball, not the opposing player

Tactical Foul – an intentional illegal maneuver meant to disrupt the flow of game play or hinder the opposition’s ability to score

Tapping-Up – a club beginning secret negotiations with a player under contract with another club, also known as “Tampering”; this practice is frowned upon and often forbidden by league rules

Technical Area – the portion of the field near the sidelines where the “Manager” and “Reserve Team” are allowed to stand

Test Match – a match that in some leagues determines “Promotion” and “Relegation”; a successful team from a lower league plays a poor-performing team in a higher league to determine which team plays in the higher league

Testimonial Match – a practice game held in honor of a veteran player, usually to commemorate his or her retirement or upon 10 years with the club

Three Points for a Win – a league and tournament system in which a winning team is awarded three points, intended to make game play more competitive and teams less willing to accept a tie

Tie – a game in which there is no clear winner; both teams have identical scores at the conclusion

Time Wasting – attempting to run the clock out while allowing the opposing team little opportunity to score, usually in order to secure a win

Total Football – a fluid system of team organization in which a player moving out of his position is replaced by the next player on the field to retain the playing scheme so that every player on the field is a potential striker, defender, etc., requires players to be extremely versatile

Training Ground – the area clubs use for player workouts and preparation for games, usually a different area from the playing field in the interest of preserving the field

Transfer Market – a term for the figurative marketplace where clubs can sign available players

Transfer Window – the period in which clubs are allowed to sign new players

The Treble – completed by a club that wins its country’s top tier league in addition to two cup competitions within a season

The Quadruple -- completed by a club that wins its country’s top tier league in addition to two cup competitions and the European Cup/Champions League within a season

Two-Legged Match – a match-up, usually part of a tournament, between two teams over two games – one at each team’s home field; the scores of the two games are added together, and the team with the highest collective score is the winner

UEFA Pro License – a license required for managing a team under the UEFA guidelines; all UEFA managers will need to complete the training for this license by 2010

Under-Soil Heating – a system heating a field’s underside to melt snow and ice off the grass in hope of preventing weather delays

Vice-Captain – a club’s assistant captain, and the captain’s replacement in the case of injury or substitution

Volley – an aggressive airborne attack at the goal, generally less accurate than a ground attack but likely less expected
