Penalty Area – a box extending 18 yards in front of and from either side of the goal; the area in which the “Goalkeeper” can handle the ball with his or her hands

Penalty Kick – a free kick from a point 12 yards in front of the goal, awarded when a penalty punishable by a “Direct Free Kick” is committed by a team within its own “Penalty Area”; before the kick, only the kicker and the goal keeper may stand within the penalty area

Penalty Shootout – a form of tie-breaker usually utilized only in elimination tournaments if the “Extra Time” has been taken and the score is still tied; teams alternate taking shots from the “Penalty Kick” area, five per team. The team with the most successful attempts advances, but the penalty kicks don’t count toward the final score, and officially the game remains tied

Pitch Invasion -- occurs when the fans rush onto the field, whether to celebrate or protest, also known as “Rushing the Field”

Player-Manager – a manager who also plays for the team, usually one of the team’s most senior players

Playmaker – an aggressive offensive player who sets up scoring opportunities for his or her teammates

Playoff – a tournament after the regular season has ended to decide the league’s champion

Prawn Sandwich Brigade – a disparaging term for proclaimed soccer fans who don’t really know about the sport or the team they claim to support

Professional Foul – an illegal maneuver specifically intended to prevent an opposing player from a goal-scoring opportunity, results in an automatic “Red Card”

Promotion– the practice in some leagues in which a set number of the best performing teams is moved into a higher league at the end of the season; the opposite of “Relegation”

Rebound – Recovery of a missed shot

Red card – a penalty card shown a player after either a serious infraction (such as a “Professional Foul”) or upon the player’s second reception of a “Yellow Card” in the same game; a player shown a red card is expelled from the game

Relegation – a practice in some leagues in which a set number of the worst teams are moved down into a lower league; the opposite of “Promotion”

Replica Shirt – a copy of a soccer team’s jersey purchased and worn by fans

Reserve Team – a second, backup group of players employed by a club
