Glossary of Soccer Terms - M - N - O
Man Marking – a defensive strategy requiring defenders to cover specific opposing players instead of defending particular areas of the field, as opposed to “Zonal Marking”
Man of the Match – an award honoring the best player in a game
Midfield Maestro – a nickname for an exceptional midfield player
Misconduct – behavior determined by the “Referee” to require disciplinary action in the form of either a “Red Card” or “Yellow Card”
Off the Ball – describes a player without possession of the ball or an action that occurs away from the ball
Offside – a complicated rule intended to ensure that offensive players cannot wait for the ball near the opposing goal; it’s most basic tenet is (with a few exceptions) that no offensive attacker may be closer to the goal than either the ball or the nearest non-goalie defender, when a fellow offensive player touches the ball, penalized by an “Indirect Free Kick”
One Touch – passing or shooting the ball on first contact without dribbling or positioning the ball, often used for quick, surprising maneuvers
One-Club man – a soccer player who spends his entire career playing for one team
Own Goal – a goal scored by a player against his or her own team, practically always an accident
