Glossary of Soccer Terms - E - F
Equalizer – a game-tying goal
Exhibition Game – a game in which there is no value placed on the outcome of the game
Extra time – a period added to the end of a tied game if the game is required to have a clear winner, generally two periods of 15 minutes each
Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) —an international organization based in Zurich, Switzerland governing the operation of international soccer tournaments
Fifth Official – the assistant to the “Fourth Official” and his or her replacement in the case of injury
First Team – a club’s most talented players
Football – soccer’s regulation ball is 27-28 inches in circumference and generally consists of 32 panels, 12 pentagons and 20 hexagons
Foul – an illegal maneuver by a player attempting to gain an unfair advantage, often an action (pushing, tripping, etc.) and usually resulting in a direct or indirect free kick
Fourth official – assistant to the “Assistant Referees” and their replacement in case of injury
Free Agent – a player who has fulfilled the terms of his or her contract and is now free to negotiate with any team
Free Transfer – when a player’s contract is fulfilled, his or her club can elect to release this player to negotiate with other teams; a “Free Transfer” also occurs when a team transfers a player to another club without monetary compensation or for a nominal fee
Freestyle Football – keeping a soccer ball airborne with creative moves of the feet, head, chest, knees, etc.
