Designated Player Rule – an exception to Major League Soccer’s salary cap, allowing each team to sign one player who would otherwise be outside the team’s salary cap, also called the “Beckham Rule” because its adoption in 2007 allowed the Los Angeles Galaxy to sign David Beckham

Direct Free Kick – a kick restarting play after a “Foul”; unlike an “Indirect Free Kick” this kick can be a direct shot on the goal, scoring without coming into contact with another player first, usually follows a dangerous foul

Diving – purposely falling to exaggerate the amount of contact made with an opposing player in hope of tricking the referee into calling a foul and awarding a Penalty Kick. This act, called “Simulation” in FIFA,, is illegal, punished by a yellow card when called

The Double – a team winning both its country’s top division and its main cup competition in the same season, or defeating a team both at home and away

Dribbling – movement of the ball downfield by a single player through a series of short kicks

Dubious Goals Committee – a commission of three former soccer players or officials that gathers to arbitrate in situations where a goal or the identity of a goal scorer is in question in the English FA Premier League 

Dummy – a player faking a pass, shot, etc., in order to confuse defenders
