Cap – In European soccer terms, a “cap” refers to a game appearance; a player with 100 international caps has played 100 international games. This term dates back to the 19th century practice of outfitting a team in specific colored caps instead of jerseys

Captain – a player, usually a key veteran, in charge of calling the coin toss before the kick off; can often be identified by  signifying armband

Caretaker manager – an interim manager called in to replace a club’s usual manager when he or she is unable or has left the organization

Catenaccio – an intensely defensive formation intended to keep an opponent from scoring; due to rule changes, this formation is rarely seen in modern soccer 

Class – the designation of skill level measurement for both players and clubs

Clean Sheet – when a club finishes a game without allowing the other team to score a goal

Corner Kick – a “Set Piece” awarded to the offensive team when a ball crosses the opposing team’s “Goal Line” after being last touched by a defender

Corridor of Uncertainty – a term originating from cricket; in soccer this refers to a circumstance in which a pass stops in front of the goalie and behind the defenders, creating an uncertain situation – Should the goalie pursue the ball or wait for the last defender?

Cross – delivering a ball from either side of the field to the area in front of the goal to create a scoring opportunity

Cup-tied – a player on a team’s roster for a cup tournament is “cup-tied” or contracted exclusively to that team for the duration of the tournament, meaning the player can’t transfer to another team in the same tournament. This rule keeps teams competing in a tournament’s later rounds from signing players from eliminated teams 

Curl – a spinning motion on a kicked ball, giving it a curved trajectory
