Advertising Board – small billboards on field displaying advertising slogans
Against the Run of Play – events occurring against the established pattern of the game, such as a team that hasn’t had possession of the ball taking possession and scoring a goal – this team would be scoring “Against the Run of Play”
All-Seater Stadium – a venue in which there is a seat for every spectator who’s purchased a ticket, no standing room only tickets, in other words
Apertura and Clausura – Countries in Latin America divide their soccer season into two parts, “Apertura” (Spanish for “opening”) and “Clausura” (Spanish for “closing”), each section with its own tournament and champion. In some countries, such as Mexico, treat each section’s winning team as national champions, while other countries, such as Venezuela, pit the winning teams against each other with the winning becoming national champion
Assist – passing the ball to a teammate in a position to allow him or her to score
Assistant Referee – formerly known as “Linesmen” these officials aid the referee by calling his or her attention to potential issues and rules violations by throwing flags; the assistant referee makes no official decisions, but only aids and advises the referee
Away Goals Rule – a method of breaking ties between two teams that have played each other at both team’s stadiums. In the case that everything else, the games and scores, are equal, the team with the most goals scored away from home has the advantage
