Glossary of Shoe Terms - Laces - Lugs

Laces Straps used for tying a shoe. The laces are crisscrossed and then strung into eyelets helping them to stay into place.
Large Volume Air Sole Unit A Nike insole unit that provides ample protection without the weight. It is firm enough to protect the heel yet still compresses to provide exceptionally cushioning.
Last The foot-shaped mold on which a shoe is constructed. The shape of the mold influences the function of the shoe; the straighter the last, the more stable the shoe. The more curved the last, the faster but more unstable the shoe.
Lateral The outside edge of the upper of a shoe.
Leather The dyed or tanned skin of an animal most typically used with the hair removed.
Lift One of the several layers made of leather or leather board used to construct a heel.
LightStrike EVA The adidas patented lightweight foam made of Ethylene Vinyl Acetate which offers exceptional foot cushioning.
Lining The inside material of a shoe which surrounds the foot. Can be made of a variety of fabrics such as leather or synthetic material.
Loafer A slip on shoe, typically a dressy casual male shoe without any fasteners.
Low heel A heel height that measures anywhere from 1/4 to 2 inches. The shape of the heel itself could range from a stiletto to a wedge.
Lugs Deep rubber treads on the underside of the outsole to prevent slipping in off-road conditions.
Lug sole A heavy tread rubber sole meant for high durability.
