Glossary of Shoe Terms - Gait cycle - Hiking boots

Gait cycle The natural movement of an individual's foot against the ground while running or walking. 
Galoshes Oversized waterproof shoes meant to protect the foot and footwear from inclement weather. Galoshes fit over one's existing shoes. 
Gel Cell A Carolina brand polymer gel that reduces the stress on the heel thus eliminating the need for removable comfort insert insoles. 
GeoFIT adidas padding within a shoe's construction selectively placed in anatomically correct areas for additional fit and comfort. 
Ghillie A style of lacing where the laces pass through fabric, leather rings or loops which are attached to the front opening of the shoe rather than eyelets. 
Girth The circumference of the shoe measured around the ball of the foot. 
Gore An elastic panel stitched to either side of the front upper making it easier to put on and take off the shoe. 
Gore-Tex A waterproof membrane that keeps water and wind out, while simultaneously letting the foot breathe. Also used in textiles.
Graphite Rollbar A New Balance technology that offers a lightweight piece of molded graphite material biomechanically positioned in the shoe's midsole to constrict the movement of the rearfoot.
Gym Shoes Gym shoes are another word for athletic shoes. Gym shoes are used for general athletic activities such as walking, games, organized sports and light running.
Heel The back of the upper where the heel sits. The heel can either be elevated or low to the ground.
Heel breast The side of the heel that faces forward. 
Heel counter A rigid plastic cup encased in the upper of the shoe around the heel. It is meant to provide a better shoe fit and control the excessive movement of the rearfoot.
Heel height The length of the heel which directly coordinates to the angle at which the foot rests inside of the shoe. 
Heel seat The part of the shoe above where the sole and heel are joined together where the heel of the foot rests in the shoe. 
Heel tab The open hook or notch on the back of the heel collar which provides a secure fit by not irritating the Achilles tendon.  
High heel A women's shoe with a heel higher than two inches. A high heel is similar to a stiletto but the heel does not have to be narrow.
Hiking boots Boots typically used for trail hiking. Hiking boots are very durable, cushioned and come higher around one's ankle for support. They can also be water proof and insulated to protect one's feet from the elements.
