Glossary of Shoe Terms - EVA - Foxing

Eclipse 5000 Reebok's closely monitored injection-molded or compression-molded EVA, for applications of durability and cushioning.
Eclipse 6000 The second step in Reebok's injection or compression molded ethylene vinyl acetate for shoes that require durability and cushioning.
EFR An adidas forefoot construction consisting of one layer made of blown rubber for cushioning which sits above another layer of harder, more durable carbon rubber. 
Elastane An elastic fabric made from polyurethane that is stronger and more durable than rubber.
Electrical Hazard Shoes Carolina footwear tested by an outside source to withstand applications of 14,400 volts at 60hz for one minute without leakage
Encap The cushioning core of ethylene vinyl acetate which when encapsulated in a polyurethane shell adds stability and disperses the shock of impact throughout the foot in the New Balance shoe.
Encapsulated Air-Sole unit An encapsulated Nike air-sole unit that is invisible from the outside of the shoe and sole. 
ESD Carolina footwear that absorbs and neutralizes static electricity by absorbing loose electrons and sending them into the floor.
Espadrilles A shoe or sandal which features woven rope or other similar styled material on the wedge or sole. 
EVA Ethylene Vinyl Acetate is an easily moldable synthetic material typically used to construct the outsole of a shoe for cushioning.
EVA Tongue An Asics lightweight tongue design that allows the foot to breathe while managing moisture and increasing comfort.
EverTrack Puma's high abrasion resistant rubber which withstands constant ground impact. 
Extended Web The extension of the New Balance Stability Web which delivers midfoot support and stability by providing a cradle for the foot.  
External Counter Reinforcer A New Balance TPU reinforcing bracket that stabilizes the heel by controlling the shoe's heel counter and preventing the foot from overpronation.
Eyelet A hole or holes through which the laces are threaded to tighten the width of the shoe. 
Flats A shoe or sandal style with a closed or opened toe and a very minimal heel and sole. A flat is very close to the ground and comes in a variety of styles. 
Flex Grooves Slight indentations or grooves found in the midsole of a shoe. The grooves help the shoe to bend with the foot under the ball.   
Flexibility The radius of which a shoe's forefoot can bend under the ball of the foot.
Flip flops A casual open heel sandal typically made of rubber or other similar material with a V strap that extends in between the big and second toe. 
Footbed Another name for the lining or insole that runs the entire length of the shoe.
Footbridge A device inserted between the Nike shoe's upper and midsole to slow the rate at which the foot rolls inward which causes the outsole to wear faster. 
Forefoot The broad, front section of the shoe or foot between the ball and the toes. 
Forefoot Air Sole Unit Nike Air cushioning units placed in the forward part of the shoe. This system reduces the stress of impact on the forefoot for those people who strike the ground with their forefoot first. 
Foxing The strip of plain or decorative rubber that joins the upper and sole of the shoe.
