Nassau -- a common golf bet with separate wagers on the “Front 9,” “Back 9” and all 18 holes
Open Face -- a swing style angling the clubface toward the player’s body, the opposite of “Closed Face”
Open Stance -- a stance intended to cause the ball to “Fade” but to prevent a “Hook” the front foot is angled away from the target line
Outward Nine -- Another term for the “Front Nine” named for the layout of older courses, which were designed to loop away and then back so the 18th hole finishes near the clubhouse, as opposed to the “Outward Nine”
Out-of-bounds -- outside the perimeter of the official course; hitting a shot out of bounds results in a one stroke penalty, and another shot must be taken from the same spot, these areas are usually marked by white pillars
Pace -- the velocity with which a ball must be hit in order to reach the hole
Par – the standard score for a hole or course, the par score for a hole is determined by the number of strokes a normal player would need to reach the green plus an additional two strokes for putting; so a par four hole should normally require two shots to get on the green
PGA -- a Professional Golfers' Association, of which there are several around the world; most commonly used in reference to the Professional Golfers' Association of America
Pin high – at a level even with the hole
Pitch -- a short-distance shot (50 yards or less, usually) hit with a high-loft wedge and with less than full strength, emphasizing accuracy over distance
Pitch Mark -- the indentation caused by a ball’s impact on the green. Players are responsible for repairing their indentation marks
Plugged Lie – a ball’s unfavorable position, usually in a bunker, where the ball is half covered by sand, also called “Buried Lie” or “Fried Egg”
Pop-up – a bad tee off in which the top of the club’s head impacts the underside of the ball and causes it to fly nearly straight up, falling short of its intended position and often denting or scuffing the club
Pro -- a paid golfer who either plays competitively in an organization such as the “PGA” or works as an instructor at a golf club
Punch shot -- a low-flying shot generally intended to avoid trees in the woods or to avoid high-speed winds,
Push -- A “Block” or a hole nobody wins
Putt -- a relatively short distance rolling ground shot, generally from the green with a “Putter”
Putter -- a specialized golf club designed to make the ball roll across the ground rather than lofting.
