Knock-down -- a low-flying shot generally intended to avoid high speed winds, similar to the “Punch Shot”

Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) – the female counterpart o the “PGA”

Lag – a delayed “Release”; key for a long distance stroke

 Lag putt – a long distance putt intended only to bring the ball closer to the hole, not necessarily to sink it

Lay-up – a shot purposely hit short of the distance that the player is capable of I order to avoid a hazard or obtain a better position for the next shot

Lie – the position the ball lands in after being hit, often used in describing the quality of the ball’s position --   “bad lie” would refer to a ball in a “Bunker” or in the rough , while a “Good lie” would be positioned on the green or fairway

Line -- the ball’s intended path to the pin, usually used in reference to putts

Links -- an oceanside course often windy and therefore without protective  vegetation such as trees


Loft -- the measurement in degrees between the face of the club head and the club’s shaft; determines the angle of the ball’s path after being hit

Mashie Niblick – an old-fashioned wooden golf club used mainly before the 1900s

Medal play -- See "Stroke Play".

Member's Bounce --an unintentional bounce a shot takes that improves its final position
 
Mickey Mantle – finishing a hole in seven strokes, refers to Mantle’s uniform number

Misread – a poor putt caused by incorrect “Green Reading”

Mulligan – a chance to redo a bad shot; only permitted in casual play when all golfers have agreed to allow them.
