Glossary of Golf Terms - E & F

Eagle -- finishing a hole in two strokes less than “Par”

Explosion -- a shot from the “Bunker” that sends sand and ideally the ball onto the green

Fade – a shot, when hit by a right-handed golfer, bends rightward, becomes a “Slice” if too angled

Fairway -- the trimmed grass surface between the tee and the green, usually the desired target from the tee and much easier to hit from than the “Rough”

Fairway Percentage – a statistic tracked on the “PGA Tour”; the amount of tee shots that hit the “Fairway” divided by the total number of tee shots

False Front -- a green with a sloped front that’s too angled to reliably land a ball on, usually the better play is to aim toward the back of the green where the ball is less likely to roll off

Fat shot – a “Chunk” shot
.
Flier -- when a ball is positioned in the shaggy rough, and long blades of grass get between the club and the ball at impact, causing the shot to have minimal spin and more than likely go farther than anticipated

Flop shot -- a short, high shot intended for the green, useful in situations where the green is small and hard to land, but is most effective from a good lie

Fore -- an exclamation warning other people to watch out for a ball you’ve put in the air

Fourball – a form of team play in which two teams of two players compete, with each individual playing his or her own ball and position (in contrast to a “Foursome”), but with only the best of the two’s scores counting for each hole; fourball also commonly refers to any group of four players on the course

Foursome -- a form of team play in which two teams of two players alternating shots on one ball, and alternating tee shots (in contrast to a “Fourball”), but with only the best of the two’s scores counting for each hole; foursome also commonly (and wrongly) refers to any group of four players on the course

Free Drop – to deposit the ball on the course (See “Drop) without incurring a stroke penalty

Front nine -- the first half of the holes on the golf course
