Ace – a “Hole in One”

Action --  See “Backspin”

Address -- to approach the ball and place the club behind the ball; if the ball moves after a player has addressed the ball there is a one stroke penalty

Aim -- the direction you want your ball to go in

Aimline -- the invisible straight line level with the hole and allowing for the uneven imperfections in the ball’s intended route

Airmail the Green – a too-hard shot that completely flies over the green

Albatross – a hole finished three strokes under par; more commonly a hole-in-one on a par four than a two stroke shot on a par five

Alignment – the positioning of a player’s body in relation to the ball’s “Target Line”

All Square – aka tied, when both players or teams have one the same number of holes; abbreviated “AS” on the scorecard

Ambrose -- a team game in which each player takes a shot and the entire team plays from the location of the best positioned ball on every play, also known as “Texas Scramble”

Angle of Attack – the angle at which the club strikes the ball; affects the way which the ball will travel, aka the “Angle of Approach”

Approach Shot -- a shot meant to position the ball on the putting green

Apron --a different surfaced patch of grass surrounding the edge of the green, separating it from the fairway

Attend the Flagstick – when another player minds the flagstick, pulling it from the pin when the ball approaches
