Latitude -- defines a location in terms of its distance north or south of the equator, measured in degrees and combined with Longitude to provide precise locations

Lazarette  -- A hatch used for storage usually in or aft of the cockpit

Lee -- the portion of the boat directed away from and sheltered from the wind

Leeward -- Facing the “Lee” as opposed to “Windward”
 
Leeway -- the sideways drift of a ship from its intended course due to wind or current

Line  -- ropes, etc. used at sea

Log -- recording of a voyage’s navigation, ship operation, etc., or an onboard device used to measure speed
 
Longitude -- defines a location in terms of its distance east or west of Greenwich, England, measured in degrees and combined with Longitude to provide precise locations

Lubber's Line -- a line made on a compass to indicate the ship’s “Heading”

Marlinspike -- a sharp tool used to separate the strands of a rope when splicing two ropes together

Mast – a structure extending upward from the hull to hold sails, rigging, etc.

Midship -- Near the center of the vessel

Moor -- attaching a vessel to a buoy or peer for security and stability

Nautical Mile -- a measurement of length on water equaling about 6,076 feet (1,852 meters), or one minute of longitudinal distance   

Navigation -- the process of guiding a vessel from one point to another

Navigation Rules -- guidelines and ordinances for vessel’s movement in relation to one another on sea
