Ebb -- The tide receding seaward

Fathom – A length of six feet

Fender --A foam or air filled bumper surrounding a boat or placed between a boat and the pier to reduce the damage caused by their collision

Figure Eight Knot -- A knot made to prevent a rope or line from slipping through a chock; it looks pretty much like it sounds

Flare -- The outward curve of a ship’s hull, or a bright burning emergency signal shot into the air   

Flood -- an influx of water

Floorboards -- the standing surface in the cockpit

Fluke -- The wedge-shaped portion of an anchor that secures it to the bottom

Following Sea -- A sea current overtaking the boat from behind

Fore-and-Aft -- Running from the bow of the ship to the stern

Forepeak -- A lower compartment in the front of the boat

Forward -- Toward the boat’s front end

Fouled -- Equipment that needs to be cleaned or disentangled

Freeboard -- the measurement of vertical distance between the upper deck and the waterline
