Cabin -- An enclosed area on deck for passengers or crew

Capsize -- When the boat rolls over completely, exposing the “Keel”

Cast Off -- Untying the boat from the dock

Catamaran -- A boat with duel, side-by-side hulls

Chafing Gear -- Protective material applied to line to reduce to the wear caused by constant friction

Chart -- The map used to make navigation decisions

Chine -- A sharp-angled intersection in the bottom and sides of a vessel

Chock -- The casing through which a line is led, often “U” shaped to reduce friction damage

Cleat -- The anvil-shaped object on the deck to which lines are attached

Clove Hitch -- A knot used to temporarily fasten a line

Coaming -- Vertical angling around the edge of a vessel (or object on the vessel) designed to keep water out

Cockpit -- A compartment on deck that contains the ship’s control devices

Coil -- A loop of line arranged in a circle

Course -- The path a boat is steered in

Cuddy -- A little cabin for shelter on a boat

Current -- Water’s horizontal path of movement
