Batten Down -- fasten or secure any loose objects or “Hatches” on deck or in the hull

Beam -- the point at which the ship is the widest

Bearing -- the directional compass reading or the point of reference on a chart
Below -- Underneath the deck

Bight -- A curved section in the rope, or the recess in a coast or a bay
Bilge -- the compartment in the bottom of the “Hull” where water collects for later pumping out

Bitter End -- The final section of the rope or cable the anchor is attached to

Boat -- A floating vessel smaller than a “Ship”

Boat Hook -- a hook on the end of a pole used to push or pull a boat or other floating object into place

Bow -- The boat’s front

Bowline -- A line securing the bow to the dock or the know used to secure the line

Bridge -- The part of the ship containing the equipment used to control the ship’s direction and speed

Bridle -- a length of line secured between two points to dissipate the strain

Brightwork -- Shiny polished woodwork or metal on a boat

Bulkhead -- The load-bearing upright partition between compartments

Buoy -- a floating object anchored to a specific location to mark something

Burdened Vessel -- See “Give-way Vessel”
