Weak Side

In basketball, the term weak side refers to the side of the court away from the ball. There are numerous plays and drills related to using the weak side of the court to a team or playerÆs advantage. If teams starts off playing offense, and the ball is on the right side of the court than that side is the strong side, while the other half is the weak side. Obviously this scenario changes quickly throughout a game. Positioning players on the weak side allows them to come in quickly and assist, a maneuver that is referred to as weak side help or help defense.

Many good rebounders position themselves on the weak side of the court to catch missed shots. Charles Barkley is an example of a player who consistently nets many points this way. The team playing offense can also set swing or reverse the basketball by passing it from strong side to weak and tiring out defensive players who are forced to run from one side of the court to the other.
