Violation

A violation, alternatively referred to as a floor violation, is a player's action that violates the rules of the game, but does not cause an opponent harm. A violation is different from a foul in that it does not involve impeding another playerÆs progress. Floor violations are penalized with a change in possession. One very common type of floor violation is traveling, which is when a player who is in possession of the ball illegally moves one or both feet without dribbling the ball.

Nearly all violations that occur are a result of a player mishandling the ball. Other common floor violations include double dribbling, carrying or palming the ball, and lane violation. Having a ball go out of bounds is not considered a floor violation, however breaking the three-second rule is. This rule states that an offensive player may not remain in the free throw lane for more than three seconds without taking a shot. if a player attempts a shot, he or she begins with a new three seconds.
