Upset

An upset occurs when a team is beat by a team that is considered to have lesser skills, and was not expected to win. This may be a higher-seeded vs. lower-seeded team as in the NCAA or NBA. Upsets are more common in college basketball than in other college sports such as football. This is, in part, because college football programs attract so much money that it is truly rare to see a smaller school with less resources put together a football team that can overtake one of the larger schoolÆs programs.

One of the most legendary college team upsets of all time occurred in 1983, when NC State, a team that had lost ten games during the regular season, managed to make it to the Final Eight and edge out a win over top-rated Houston to take the NCAA Championship. In the history of the NBA, only once has a No. 8 seed defeated a No. 1 seed during playoffs. It happened in 1994, when the Denver Nuggets pulled off a surprise upset over the Seattle Sonics.
