Live

A ball is live when it is in play. Once a ball is passed in bounds, tapped on the jump ball, or shot during a foul shot it is considered live. The game clock does not start until the ball is live. Once the ball is put into play, and thereby live, it can be passed, dribbled, shot and stolen.

Teams develop different strategies to get the ball into play. While the ball is live the offense attempts to move it down the court toward their basket while the defense attempts to stop the offense from scoring. A team who is ahead may attempt to stall the action on offense to run out the clock. The ball must remain live for this to happen. The defense may try to stop this by knocking the ball out of bounds or fouling an offensive player.

A ball does not remain ôdeadö for long during competition play. It is quickly put back into play because scoring cannot happen until the ball is live.
