Inside Shooting

Inside shooting are shots that a basketball player takes underneath or within the immediate vicinity of the basket, and includes lay-ups and slam-dunks. Shots that are taken from æinside the paintÆ, the area closest to the basket, have the greatest chance of going in, but also require a specific set of skills. A lay-up is a basketball shot that is made using one hand from a position very close to (under or beside) the basket.

Lay-ups are usually banked from the backboard. When a player dunks the ball, he or she propels the ball downward through the basket without touching the backboard. Shots that are made within the area directly surrounding the basket are within the three-point line, meaning that they are worth only two points. It is possible to get additional points if the team is quick to rebound. Teams at every level of play spend a substantial amount of time working on drills for scoring points on the inside.
