Incidental Contact

Incidental contact is unintended physical contact between players during a basketball game. Some minor contact during play is both expected and ignored by officials. The NBA states that æthe mere fact that contact occurs does not necessarily constitute a foul.Æ The hand is considered an extension of the ball when they are in contact, defensive attempts to obtain the ball that result in touching the hand or arm of the player holding it are considered incidental contact.

Of course, this can be an area of contention between referees, players and fans, and judging whether contact is incidental or not can be difficult. If the contact occurs as a matter of normal play, as in making normal offensive or defensive movements or attempting to get a loose ball, it will be considered incidental and as such not result in a foul. Contact can be called incidental and ignored by referees even when a player is injured, provided that it was not purposeful and meets the criteria above.
