In the Paint

In the paint is a basketball term that is used to describe the shaded area of a basketball court that extends from the free throw line to the closest baseline. This is a critical area from which defense players should cover the basket. Preventing an easy lay-up must be a top defensive priority, which requires that all players sprint back to the paint area to be ready to intercept the offense.

There are numerous offensive plays that are associated with this critical area of the court as well. One of the most commonly executed plays is a motion offense. This play uses all of the offensive players to create distraction and make room for a shooter to become positioned by the basket. The shooter should be a player who is good at making lay-ups, and can then move quickly to score one or more baskets.
