Full Court Press
The full court press is a defense that puts pressure on the opposing team starting in their backcourt. The object of a press defense is to create turnovers and steal the ball, while preventing the opposing team from getting into their frontcourt. Most teams only use the full court press in specific situations, usually at the end of a game or when the other team has pulled out a large lead.
While a team could use the full court press as their base defensive strategy, it is physically demanding and can create break away opportunities for the opposing team. A team must be quick, agile, and have good overall endurance to play an effective full court press. Full court press can be played man to man or as a zone defense.
In man to man press defense each player covers their assigned player immediately and pressures them from the time their team gains possession. In a zone press defense each player has a zone and they cover the player as they enter the zone. This offers double team opportunities and prevents a player from getting a break away if they beat their defender.
