Freezing
Freezing is a strategy used in which the leading team attempts to keep the ball away from its opponents in an effort to keep them from having the opportunity to score before time runs out. It is also called the keep away game. The introduction of the shot clock made this tactic a little harder, but it is still used.
A team’s ability to freeze the other team requires good passing skills and smart play. It requires a team to use as much time as possible bringing the ball up the court and then passing the ball around while keeping possession. Even with the modern shot clock, many teams are able to hold the ball for long periods of time and keep the ball away from the other team.
Fouling is one strategy teams use to counter the freezing tactic. A defender might purposely foul a player to force them to take foul shots, and thereby get a chance to get a rebound or at least get the ball back. The full court press is also used by some teams to try to get a quick steal and prevent the other team from freezing them out.
