Free Agent, Unrestricted

A player in the NBA who has been in the league for at least three years (four years if the player’s team exercises the option to have him play a fourth year), and whose contract expires, may enter unrestricted free agency. An unrestricted free agent is free to sign with any team without giving his current team the option to match the offer.

Any player whose contract expires without an offer from his current team, who enters the league undrafted, or whose team does not place a restriction clause in their contract may become an unrestricted free agent and sign with any team.

Teams who enter free agency are subject to the salary cap rules and a new team cannot sign the player to an amount that would put them over the salary cap. The salary cap rules do not apply to a player’s current team, and they may resign a player to a higher amount even if the salary cap is breached.
