Free Agent, Restricted

A player in the NBA whose contract expires is considered a free agent, but his current team may give him a qualifying offer, allowing them the chance to match any competing teams’ offers before releasing him. A restricted free agent is allowed to solicit and negotiate offers from other teams but can only leave if his current team refuses to match the offer from another team.

If a player’s current team matches the offer from another team then the player must return to his current team for another contract term. Most players who are receiving a large salary from their current team do not opt for free agency unless they know they have a large contract waiting elsewhere.

Players may opt out of their current contracts and enter free agency, as well, however there is no guarantee that a better contract will be waiting. The possibility of getting a lesser contract keeps many players from choosing this option.
