Franchise

A franchise refers to a team in the National Basketball Association. A new team must apply to the NBA to be accepted into the league. There are currently 30 franchises in the NBA, with 29 in the U.S. and one in Canada.

The NBA began with 11 franchises in 1946. The league was actually called the Basketball Association of America (BAA) at the time. The league stayed at 11 teams until 1954 when it dropped to eight. Those eight franchises are still in existence today; the Knicks, Celtics, Warriors, Lakers, Royals/Kings, Pistons, Hawks, and Nationals/76ers. From 1966 to 1974 the league grew to 18 franchises, and with the 1976 acquisition of the ABA, 4 new teams joined bringing the number to 22 franchises. Since then 8 more franchises have been added.

The Boston Celtics have won the most NBA championships with 17 “NBA Finals” wins. The Los Angeles Lakers are second with 14 wins and the Chicago Bulls come in third with six championships, all over an 8 year span in the 1990s.
