Floor Violation

A floor violation is an illegal action by a player that does not harm an opponent or hinder his or her movement. This usually results in a possession change. This is different from a foul which results from contact with another player, or poor sportsmanlike behavior.

Common floor violations include; 3 second violation, traveling, double dribble, illegal assist in scoring, illegal defense, goal tending, kicked ball, shot clock violation, 10 second violation, and backcourt violations. These are all violations that do not involve a foul against another player, but they result in loss of possession.

When a floor violation is committed the opposing team gets the ball at the sideline or endline near where the violation was committed. They then put the ball back into play. Floor violations can only occur when the ball is alive. Most floor violations are committed by the offensive team, while most fouls are committed by the defensive team.
