Flagrant Foul

A flagrant foul is needless or gratuitous illegal contact made against an opponent. Intentional fouling of an opponent may be called a flagrant fall at times, as well. Any contact with the intent to injure another player is a flagrant foul also and results in ejection from the game and possible subsequent game suspension.

A flagrant foul can be called whether the ball alive or a dead ball. The NBA rule 12b section IV delineates flagrant fouls into two categories with those in category one being treated as a personal foul, with the option of the referee to eject the player if they deem it necessary. A category two flagrant foul results in an immediate ejection from the game. A player charged with two level one flagrant fouls must also be ejected.

The NBA rule 12 also allows for a minimum $1000 fine for players who commit flagrant fouls. The language used in the rule to define a flagrant foul is “unnecessary” for a level one foul, and “unnecessary and excessive” for a level two.
