Finals, NBA
The Finals in the National Basketball Association’s championship series takes place between the winners of the Eastern and Western Conference finals. The champion is decided in a best of seven (i.e., first to win four) games series. Home Court Advantage for the games is determined in the following manner: the team with the better regular season record hosts the first two games, followed by three games (if all three games are necessary) at the other team’s home court, then the remaining two games (if needed) are played at the first team’s court again.
The first NBA Finals were played in 1947 and have been played every year since. The winner of the series is awarded the Larry O’Brien Championship Trophy (winners from 1947 to 1977 were given the Walter A. Brown Trophy).
The Finals have been marked by dynasty periods in which one or two teams have dominated the series. The Celtics had the longest run with a hold on the series from 1957 to 1969. The Lakers and Celtics together have had a strong presence in the Finals.
