Established Position

A player is considered to have an established position if he or she has both feet firmly planted on the floor before an opponent's head and shoulders get past him or her. The key to established position is planting the feet, the player cannot be moving when contact is made.

Blocking is a foul called when the player does not have an established position and makes contact with the offensive player. Charging is called on the offensive player if the defensive player has an established position and the offensive player runs into him or her. This foul is usually called on the sideline or the free throw lane when a player moves into position quickly and the offensive player is unable to change direction.

Established position evens the playing field for defense. The offensive player cannot charge through them once they have an established position. Quickness, agility, and good anticipation of the opponentÆs movements will help a player get into an established position and possibly draw a charging foul.
