Endline

The endline is the line at either end of the court marking the boundary on that end. It is the same as the baseline. There are two endlines on a basketball court. After a basket is made, or if the ball goes out of bounds at the endline, the ball is brought back into play from behind the endline.

The endline is designated by a line painted or taped on the floor with a minimum width of 2 inches. It is usually the same width as the sideline. The basket is located 4 feet in front of the endline.

Teams usually have different plays for bringing a ball inbounds from the endline than from the sideline. The strategy is also different for bringing the ball in from the endline in the frontcourt than from the backcourt. Teams often learn to use the endline to their advantage; defensively as an extra defender, and offensively as an alley for crossing the court.
