Elbowing

Elbowing is an illegal maneuver in which the player swings his or her elbows aggressively, regardless of whether contact is made with another player. If contact occurs, a foul is called, and if that contact is made to the head, the offending player will be ejected from the game.

A player may extend his or her elbows when bringing the ball down from a rebound to protect the ball, but they cannot swing their elbows to move, or injure, another player. A player using an elbow to intentionally injure another player will be ejected from the game and may be suspended from subsequent games.

Elbowing is most often called on an offensive player making a turn or move to the side and swinging the elbow to clear the defender. A defender can also be called for it if he or she swings an elbow to pin an offensive player to a position. To avoid an elbowing call a player should keep his or her elbows in and use extended arms with defending.
