Dunk

A dunk is the act of jumping and throwing the ball downward into the basket at close range. This is often used to show offensive dominance. It is also often referred to as a slam dunk, slam, or jam. Julius 'the Doctor' Erving or Dr. J., arguably brought the dunk to the forefront of basketball entertainment.

Many would argue that the dunk is less about scoring the two points and more about showboating. A break away finished off by a dunk is a powerful statement to the defense. Centers and forwards are usually the ones performing dunks, however there have been some very gifted guards who dunk well.

In 1976 the ABA started the tradition of the slam dunk contest. After the ABA was merged with the NBA the slam dunk contest was forgotten, until 1984 when it was reintroduced in Denver, Colorado. Although dunking is considered a skill of the big men, 5 foot 6 inch Spudd Webb won the dunk contest in 1986.
