Drive to the Basket

The drive to the basket is a quick, aggressive move toward a scoring position with the ball. A player driving to the basket must make a choice to shoot or draw the defense and then pass. This skill requires good dribbling skills and court vision. Once the ball handler has entered the frontcourt he or she may decide to drive to the basket or slow down the offense and set up a play.

Many designed plays in basketball are set up to open a lane for a player to make a drive to the basket. This often involves other players moving in a way to draw their defenders out of the lane and possibly setting a pick for the driving player. The culmination of a good drive to the hoop is a lay-up, or even a dunk.

Ball control, agility, quickness, and good vision are all important elements of the drive to the basket. The point guard often makes a drive to the hoop. Forwards and the center may also drive to the basket from an outside position. A good all-around player must be adept at driving to the basket, along with other skills.
