Dribble Series

The dribble series is the consecutive dribbles a player makes before resting the ball in one or both hands. After a dribble series the ball handler must either pass or shoot the ball. If the player dribbles again it results in the other team getting possession of the ball, this is called a double dribble.

There is no limit, high or low, to the number of dribbles allowed in a dribble series. One dribble can be a series. Once a dribble series is completed, the ball is held, the player cannot dribble again until the ball is passed and then passed back, shot and rebounded, or a defender knocks the ball loose. In these cases a new dribble series begins.

The double dribble rule, only one consecutive dribble series, is difficult for many young players to grasp. It is seldom an issue in upper level play, as players are more experienced.
