Draft

The draft is the process used by the teams of National Basketball Association to select new players. Players are generally drafted from college teams, although some come from foreign teams or even straight out of high school. Undrafted players may still make an NBA team through try-outs.

The order in which NBA teams select prospective players is determined by a weighted lottery system. This system gives the worst finishing teams a better chance of receiving the top draft pick by giving that team more chances in the lottery, and the second worst slightly fewer and so on until the last team in the lottery gets one chance. The current lottery is a 14-team lottery.

The lottery system is designed to allow the lowest placing teams the chance to improve with top picks. These picks can be traded for players or other picks as well. There are only two rounds in the NBA draft. This opens up the options for undrafted players.
