Defense

Defense refers to the team without possession of the ball. The act of playing defense refers to the team's attempt to keep the team with the ball, the offense, from scoring. Defense also includes defending against passing, and attempting to steal the ball.

The defense uses positioning, anticipation, and reaction to stop the offense from scoring. Defenses are classified by their aggressiveness and positioning. Man to man defense involves guarding one player wherever he or she may go. Zone defense involves guarding a particular area (zone) of the floor. And, press defense has players in the backcourt trying to prevent the team from bringing the ball up the court.

Teams with good speed and endurance may choose a man-to-man defense. A slower team, with taller players may decide to play zone, while an aggressive team striving for quick turnovers and scores may play a press defense. Teams may switch between defenses from game to game, or even during a game, depending on situations.
