Dead Ball

A ball is considered dead when it is no longer in play. There are many situations in which the ball becomes dead. When the ball is dead it cannot be advanced or shot until it is put back into play. Once the ball is back in play it is said to be alive.

A ball is considered dead after it passes through the hoop on a shot, when it goes out of bounds, or after the official has blown the whistle for a foul or other violation. At this time, the ball is given to the team of possession to put it back into play, with either a foul shot or passing it in bounds.

Dead is also often used to refer to the ball after a player has stopped his or her dribble. The defender covering the player may yell "Dead...dead…dead!" to let other players know that the ball must be passed or shot, and can no longer be advanced with a dribble.
