Cylinder

The cylinder refers to the imaginary extension of the basket upward. This is the area in which the ball cannot be touched by any defensive player. When a ball is shot at the basket and it begins its downward arc toward the basket, it cannot be touched once it enters the cylinder. This is called ôGoal Tendingö and is a rule infraction.

To understand the cylinder, imagine a tube inserted into the rim and extended to the ceiling. This cylinder actually widens slightly as it extends above the rim. Since it is an invisible zone it is also subject to a refereeÆs interpretation.

A player performing a slam dunk actually enters the cylinder during the shot. Envisioning the cylinder actually helps players develop their shot, as well. Cylinder is also used to refer to the area immediately around the body of a player. This is used in determining fouls, and is called the cylinder principle.
