Crossover Dribble
The crossover dribble is a basic dribbling skill that involves bouncing the ball from one hand to the other across the body. The ball is bounced in front of the body at an angle so it bounces up to the other hand. The crossover dribble is used to change direction or avoid a defender. The crossover may also be used to place the ball into the proper position for shooting or open up for a pass.
The point guard and other guard positions should be skilled in the crossover dribble. Although it is a basic dribbling skill, it will be used a great deal while moving the ball down the court. Performing the skill properly will protect the ball and allow the player to move in both directions, easily.
Dribbling practice should include work on proper crossover technique and the correct timing to use it. Dribbling against defenders and around obstacles will also help develop the crossover dribble. Agility and good hand/eye coordination are essential to the crossover dribble.
