Court

The court is the area where the game of basketball is played. A regulation sized basketball court measures 94 feet by 50 feet. It is bounded by two sidelines and two endlines. There are two baskets, one at each end. Most courts are marked with a center circle, half court line, key or shaded lane, free throw line, free throw circle, and a three point arc.

A basketball court may be indoors or out and the playing surface will vary by location. Most indoor courts have hardwood or synthetic floors, while outdoor courts are generally covered with asphalt or cement. Indoor courts generally have glass or metal backboards, metal rims and cloth or rope nets. Outdoor courts usually have metal backboards, metal rims and chain, rope, or no nets.

The original basketball court was in the gymnasium at Springfield with a peach basket nailed to an elevated track at each end. That original court was half the size of the modern day court, and had none of the current markings.
