The alternating possession rule makes sure that teams alternate receiving the ball after a ôjump ballö ruling by the referee. In the NBA, possession of a jump ball is decided by an actual jump ball, but in other competitions possession is determined by the alternating possession arrow on the scorerÆs table (or scoreboard).

If the referee determines that the ball is tied up between two players and calls a ôjump ball,ö then possession goes to the team whose basket the alternating possession arrow is pointing to. The arrow changes after each jump ball. At the start of the game it goes to the team that lost the opening jump ball (opening tip-off).

The alternating possession arrow entered college basketball in 1981. Other organizations followed suit in later years, except the NBA who still uses the actual jump ball. There is a lot of controversy surrounding the alternating possession rules, with proponents maintaining its fairness, while opponents argue its unfairness.
