Charging

A charging foul occurs when an offensive player runs into a defender who already has established position. This is an offensive foul, opposite of the defensive blocking foul. This foul results in loss of possession.

Charging often occurs as a player is moving the ball down the sideline and a defensive player quickly establishes position on the sideline. The offensive player may try to push by, but if the defensive player has planted his feet and he is not moving this will result in a charging call. The offensive player must quickly beat the defender to the spot or change direction to move the defender off the position.

Charging is also common when driving to the basket for a lay up. The defender may take a position in front of the basket and the offensive player going for the shot then runs, or jumps, into that player resulting in a charging foul.
