Center

The Center is generally the largest player on the team. The center uses his or her dominant height to score from and defend a position near the basket. The center is generally the one who jumps in jump ball situations. In rare circumstances, the center may not be the tallest player, but instead the player who can jump the highest.

The center usually defends the center from the other team in a man to man defense. In a zone defense, the center is most often in the middle of the zone near the basket. If a team has a taller center they may try to work the ball to that player underneath the basket. If the center is shorter, but more athletic, then he or she may get the ball outside and try to drive to the basket.

Against a tall center the defense may attempt to double team him or her as the ball enters the zone. The center may not be the best dribbler and may not have a great outside shot, but he or she should have a good post shot and be able to rebound well.
